Discernment Counseling for Couples in South Carolina – Five Forks, Simpsonville & Virtual

Is Your Relationship at a Crossroads?

If you’re feeling stuck, uncertain, or conflicted the future of your relationship but aren’t sure how to proceed, Discernment Counseling may be the right step.

Discernment Counseling is designed for couples on the brink of divorce who need clarity and confidence before deciding their next move.

Why Traditional Marriage Counseling Doesn't Always Work

Many couples enter marriage counseling hoping it will provide answers, only to leave feeling more discouraged. Here’s why:
Assumption of buy-in: Traditional marriage counseling assumes both partners want to repair the relationship. For highly distressed couples, that’s often not the case.
Leaning out vs. leaning in: Typically, one partner is “leaning out,” feeling uncertain or ready to leave, while the other is “leaning in,” desperate to repair the marriage. This mismatch can make the leaning-out partner feel like the “bad guy” and the leaning-in partner feel hopeless.
Pressure to solve too soon: The push to “work on things” can overwhelm the hesitant partner, which may increase conflict, disengagement, or resentment.
The result? Couples sometimes spend months in half-hearted therapy that leaves them more convinced that their marriage is over.

What is Discernment Counseling?

Discernment Counseling is a structured, short-term protocol that is designed for mixed agenda couples, where one partner is leaning out and ambivalent about therapy, and the other is leaning-in and wants to pursue therapy.

For couples in crisis, swift movement toward clarity is critical. The goal of Discernment Counseling is to help the couple gain clarity and confidence about the direction of their marriage, based on a deeper understanding of what’s happened to the relationship and each person’s contributions to the problems. Half-hearted couples therapy when one partner is not fully invested in the process is largely unsuccessful; Discernment Counseling is specifically designed to help these couples because it:

  • Honors both perspectives – validating the leaning-in partner’s desire for change while respecting the leaning-out partner’s need for space and clarity.
  • Focuses on clarity, not fixing – the goal isn’t immediate repair but helping each partner better understand what’s happened in the marriage and their own contributions to the struggles.
  • Creates confidence in next steps – whether that’s moving toward separation, staying the course, or making a wholehearted attempt at reconciliation.

Discernment Counseling focuses on the key dynamics and patterns that are most relevant to a couple’s current crisis, ensuring that the process is both timely and effective.

Discernment counseling helps couples step back and ask:

  • How did we get here?
  • What role have I played in our struggles?
  • Given what we’ve learned, what path forward feels right for us?

How It Works

Short-term commitment: No more than 1–5 sessions.
Balanced format: Each session includes individual reflection time plus a joint debrief, so both partners feel heard without pressure. Most of the conversations in Discernment Counseling are conducted one-on-one, which allows each partner to openly explore their contributions to the problems in the marriage in a more honest way.
Paced by you: After the initial 2-hour intake session, you and your partner decide at the end of each meeting whether to continue.

How Discernment Counseling Can Help

Many couples describe discernment counseling as a relief. It removes the pressure to “fix things” right away and creates space for honest reflection.

Instead of rushing into divorce OR dragging each other through ineffective and painful marriage counseling, couples walk away with a clearer sense of their options, their role in the challenges, and what they truly want for their future.

Three Possible Outcomes

By the end of discernment counseling, couples choose one of three directions:
Path 1: Stay the course – Continue the relationship as it is, with greater awareness of what that means.
Path 2: Divorce – Separate with more clarity and mutual understanding about their role in the relationship
Path 3: Reconciliation with a clear agenda for change – Commit to marriage counseling with divorce off the table for at least six months, giving both partners space to make an all-in effort at repair

How Can I Get Started with Discernment Counseling?

Step 1: Complete The Free 2-Minute Quiz

Each of you are encouraged to complete this short quiz to help you determine whether discernment counseling may be the right next step for your relationship based on your unique situation.

Your answers will help clarify whether traditional couples counseling or discernment counseling is the best fit right now, depending on your level of commitment, motivation, and openness to change.

Step 2: Schedule Your Clarity Calls

If your quiz results suggest that discernment counseling may be a good fit, you’ll receive a link to schedule a 30-minute Clarity Call. These calls allow me to learn more about each of you and determine whether discernment counseling is the right next step.

Each partner must schedule their own individual Clarity Call. The total cost for both calls is $100 ($50 per partner), which will be applied toward your 2-hour intake session if you decide to move forward.

Step 3: Schedule Your Intake Session

After you and your partner complete your Clarity Calls and we determine that Discernment Counseling is a good fit, we’ll schedule your 2-hour intake session. This session can take place in person at my Five Forks office or virtually through a secure telehealth platform.

The intake session fee is $425. After applying your $100 credit from the Clarity Calls, your total for the 2hr intake session will be $325.

Discernment Counseling Investment
vs.
Cost of Divorce in South Carolina

Discernment counseling is designed as a short-term protocol (1–5 sessions total). It provides clarity and direction for couples facing uncertainty, which is very different from traditional marriage counseling. Investing in discernment counseling may help avoid the financial and emotional toll of divorce.

The Emotional Cost Too: Regret & Second Thoughts

30%–80% of individuals regret divorcing, especially when done for the “wrong reasons” or prematurely.
One study found that up to 50% of divorced individuals regret the decision once the emotional dust settles.
Discernment counseling helps avoid these regrets by offering a structured, intentional pause, giving each person time to reflect thoughtfully instead of reacting impulsively.

Why Choose Discernment Counseling?

  • Empathetic & Direct: You’ll feel truly understood—your commitment honored and your partner’s caution respected.

  • Clarity Over Conflict: The goal is not to patch things up, but to help you both understand what’s best for your future, together or apart.

  • Short-Term, Meaningful: Focused, intentional sessions—no long-term commitment.

  • Flexible & Accessible: In-office at my office in Five Forks (Simpsonville) or remote via secure telehealth—your convenience, your choice. Available to all residents of South Carolina.

Frequently Asked Questions About Discernment Counseling

Traditional couples counseling assumes both partners are committed to working on the relationship. In discernment counseling, the goal isn’t to fix or heal, but to help each partner gain clarity and confidence about whether they want to move toward repair, separation, or continued uncertainty. Sessions focus heavily on individual reflection, not joint problem-solving.

  • Step 1: 30-Minute Clarity Call (Each Partner) – confidential, to ensure this approach is a good fit. The total cost of these calls is just $100, and that amount can be applied to your intake session should you choose to pursue discernment counseling.
  • Step 2: 2-Hour Intake Session – includes individual time with each partner and a joint debrief. The total cost is $425, but you can apply the initial $100 for the clarity calls as a credit, which would bring the cost of your intake to $325.

Step 3: Up to 4 Additional Sessions – each 90 minutes. After every session, you decide whether to schedule another.
Discernment counseling always ends by the fifth session, providing clarity without dragging the process out. The total cost for each 90-minute follow-up session is $325.

Yes, that’s exactly what it’s designed for. If one partner is leaning in (wanting to save the marriage) while the other is leaning out (unsure or hesitant), discernment counseling creates space for both perspectives. It validates the leaning-in partner’s desire for change while also honoring the other’s uncertainty, so neither feels pressured into a commitment they’re not ready for.

No. Discernment counseling is not about making that decision for you; it’s about giving you the clarity, insight, and confidence to make the decision yourselves. My role is to guide reflection and help you better understand your relationship patterns, not to prescribe an outcome.

At the end of discernment counseling, couples usually move in one of three directions:

  1. Decide to divorce with greater clarity and respect.
  2. Choose to commit to marriage counseling and do the deeper work of repair.
  3. Take a pause with new insights and revisit the decision later.

If you both choose to pursue marriage counseling, you can work with me directly or I can refer you to an excellent marriage counselor who specializes in longer-term couples work.

  • 30-minute Clarity Calls (one for each partner): $100 total, credited to intake
  • 2-hour Intake Session: $425 ($325 after above credit)
  • Targeted 90-minute Follow-Up Sessions: $325 each (up to 4 sessions, as needed)

Discernment counseling is designed to be short-term and high-impact, typically no more than five sessions. Many couples view it as a worthwhile investment in clarity and confidence—especially when compared to the average divorce in South Carolina, which costs $12,600–$18,900+ depending on complexity.

No, discernment counseling is not covered by insurance because it is not considered treatment for a mental health condition. Instead, it is a short-term, specialized service designed to help couples gain clarity about whether to work on their marriage or move toward separation or divorce.

While insurance cannot be billed, many couples choose to use HSA (Health Savings Account) or FSA (Flexible Spending Account) funds to pay for sessions. Cash and credit card payments are also accepted.

Not at all. In fact, one of the biggest misconceptions about discernment counseling is that the only “success” is staying married. The real goal is clarity. The only way this process doesn’t serve you is if neither of you walks away with new insight into the patterns that hurt your marriage and how each of you contributed. Those insights are what help you grow — whether that growth happens inside your marriage or in a future relationship.
